Wentelteefje

Wentelteefje

‘Wentelteefjes’ literally translated in English is ‘Turning Bitches’. Where does the name come from and what are they called elsewhere? The old Dutch word ‘ Wentelteefjes ‘ can indeed be traced back. ‘Wentel’ comes from the word ‘turn around’, so to turn around. ‘Teefje’ is a word that used to be used as the predecessor of the word ‘pastry’. Teefje is also a female dog.

In English ‘Wentelteefjes’ called ‘French Toast’. There are several stories about the origin of this name. The most surprising is the claim that this name has been assigned to this dish because the word ‘French’ ensured a more luxurious look. This way the chefs could ask more money for the dish.
French toast is definitely not the French name for French toast. In France they call them ‘Pain Perdu’. The literal translation of this is ‘lost bread’, so stale bread. This in turn links to the discovery that the Romans once made and sealed the ‘lost bread’ as tasty. They have also been the creators of this recipe
